Looking for a new way to get students analyzing music and thinking critically?

Introducing the first annual Quaver’s March Music Madness

Each week from March 15th to April 2nd, composers from four different musical periods–Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Impressionist–will square off to see who has the ultimate classical piece!

How to participate in Quaver’s March Music Madness:

  • Starting on March 15th, visit the QuaverMusic Facebook Page to view our weekly bracket standings.
  • The competition begins with eight classical pieces from the Baroque, Romantic, Classical, and Impressionist periods.
  • Head to the QuaverMusic Blog to cast your students’ vote for their favorite piece from each of the brackets.
  • Join us on the blog each week to vote on your favorites—and on April 6th, the winner will be revealed on the QuaverMusic Facebook page and right here on the blog!

Download a PDF of the bracket to share with your class here

And your 2018 Quaver’s March Music Madness winner is…

Congratulations to Tchaikovsky and his winning piece, “The Nutcracker, Op. 71a: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy!”

It was a close race but in a final upset, the Romantic Period came out on top!

Thanks for participating in Quaver’s March Music Madness! We hope you enjoyed analyzing these pieces with your students, thinking critically, and having fun!

And a very special congratulations to the following teachers for having near PERFECT brackets during Quaver’s Music Madness! You and your students will all find a rockin’ new outfit for your avatar in your account- your very own uniform! Congratulations to Ms. Viner of LaCygne Elementary, Ms. Setchell of Apollo Elementary, Ms. Guillotte of Kohfeldt Elementary, and Ms. Uhland of St. Mark’s Episcopal Academy!

Thanks again to ALL who participated! See you next year!

Boom-Chicka-Boom!

See you next year!

I love this idea! However, we are on spring break the week of the 15th. Will we still be able to participate if we start late or is there a way to start this week?

Hi Jan! You can use this activity with your students as you please. If you need to start a little late, that’s okay! Just maybe don’t show them the winners if we are a bit ahead of you 🙂 You can submit your total bracket with guesses (not necessarily who your class would vote for but who you think the QMunity will vote for) before March 15th (before voting starts) for a chance to win some cool stuff for your classes’ avatar!

Do we submit our winners for the first bracket between March 15-22?

How do we submit the bracket? We can’t edit it.

      Hi Carla!

I would suggest printing it out, filling it out by hand and maybe taking a picture and emailing it. Or using an editing service (if you have one) to enter your own text.

      Whatever is easier!

I have collected votes from my students… they are loving it! But I can’t figure out where on the blog to submit student votes? I already did my teacher vote. Where do I enter/cast my student votes?

Voting has not started yet! You’ll actually vote in the different rounds each week here on the blog but it’s not up yet!

You can submit a completed bracket with your predictions to Maura@QuaverMusic.com!

I had my students in 5th/4th pretend that they were in court, and they had to defend each piece, and composer in debate and tell why they like a certain piece of music over the other one

The bracket said Quarterfinals were until March 23. Why are the results already up? Not all of my classes have voted, and I didn’t get a chance to add the ones who had…

      Hi Barbara!

We just realized that the actual bracket had an error on it. While the instructions on Facebook and the actual blog post said Thursday, the bracket did say Friday. My apologies for that! I’ll put the voting back up for today.

So when will the results be up? I can’t access Facebook at school, so I’ll be checking tonight after our concert and again in the morning. We’re ready to start the next round! LOVE this activity!!!
